Davanzo: Grants Will Expand Recreation Opportunities
January 16, 2024
HARRISBURG - Rep. Eric Davanzo (R-Westmoreland) announced today the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) has awarded funds to two recreation projects in the 58th Legislative District through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program.
“Recreation is a big quality-of-life aspect for any community, and our local officials work hard to make certain that local facilities are well-maintained, safe and usable,” Davanzo said. “Grants such as these help our communities keep and even expand recreation opportunities.”
Among the awardees is the growing DiVirgilio Sports Complex in Rostraver Township, which was awarded $190,000 for the installation of five pickleball courts. The project includes lighting and the creation of 14 parking spaces.
Pickleball is also the priority for a project in North Huntingdon Township, where local officials are seeking to build pickleball courts at Oak Hollow Park off Morris Avenue. The project, sought by both Davanzo and Rep. George Dunbar (R-Westmoreland), was awarded $100,000. Both members represent North Huntingdon Township. Support for both projects also came from Sen. Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland).
“You don’t have to look hard to see that pickleball is growing in popularity because it has appeal to such a wide range of age groups and abilities,” said Davanzo. “Both projects will be a great addition for the area, and I was happy to work with Rep. Dunbar and Sen. Ward to get the grants approved.”
“From making it more affordable to heat our homes in the winter to helping our communities thrive by helping us to maintain our facilities, the natural gas industry in Pennsylvania has been a winner for Westmoreland County,” said Ward. “This is a perfect example of how natural gas drilling has helped fund local projects in our communities, making us stronger while also advancing our state’s economy to put our nation on a path to energy independence.”
Established in 2004, the CFA is an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development. The awards for these projects are funded by the Marcellus Legacy Fund, which was established by Act 13 of 2012. The Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program allocates funding for development and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open space, parks, and beautification projects.
